About West Des Moines Residents Directory

West Des Moines has no single current book of every resident. Useful sources are divided among four county property systems, Iowa election and court records, county recorder indexes, and local history collections. We organize those routes so readers can match a name, street, or older address with the office or collection most likely to hold the record.

Why We Built This Reference

Older printed directories are now historical sources, while present-day records remain spread across distinct custodians. A West Des Moines parcel may belong to Polk, Dallas, Warren, or Madison County. The proper county assessor and recorder depend on the parcel's situs, not merely its postal label. Election information follows separate Iowa rules, and historic volumes are held by the Des Moines Public Library, Polk Central Services, the West Des Moines Historical Society, and state archives. We bring together official search routes, known coverage, office contacts, and access limits without pretending they form one master resident roll.

Resources Collected Here

  • Pages by angle: the street directory (address-keyed records), the city directory (the historical shelf), and the resident lookup (one-person searches)
  • Official custodians: county assessors and recorders, auditors, Clerks of District Court, Iowa HHS, and the West Des Moines City Clerk
  • Practical methods: steps for reading a directory entry, checking an address, and following a dated household trail
  • Access boundaries: Iowa Code chapter 22 guidance, record-specific confidentiality, and request options when an index is incomplete

Limits of Our Role

This is a privately operated reference. It is not part of West Des Moines, Polk, Dallas, Warren, or Madison County, the State of Iowa, a court, or a library. Those boundaries mean:

  • We cannot confirm whether a specific person currently lives in West Des Moines
  • We cannot pull, certify, or change any record on your behalf
  • We cannot add anyone to, or remove anyone from, any roll or database
  • We cannot give legal advice about a record or a dispute
  • We cannot guarantee that a portal, fee, coverage year, or office detail has not changed

Only the custodian office can confirm, certify, or correct a record. Nothing found through this site may be used for credit, employment, tenant, or insurance decisions.
